Wyndham Hotel Group has signed a 25-year management agreement for a landmark hotel to be built on the Cardiff Bay waterfront.

The development, by Cardiff-based Bayscape, is on the site of the International Sports Village – one of Europe’s largest urban regeneration schemes – and connects with the newly completed 350-berth Cardiff Marina.

The 200 room hotel will be a 32-storey, 127m tower, making it the tallest building in Wales and the tallest hotel tower in the UK, according to the developer.

As well as the 200 rooms, there will be 35 serviced apartments on the top floors of the tower.

The hotel will include a bar and restaurant on the 24th and 25th floors and will offer a spa, conference facilities, and meeting rooms.

Malta-based hotel operators CHI Hotels & Resorts, Wyndham’s joint-venture management partner in EMEA, will be giving its technical assistance and advice in the planning and design of the Wyndham Cardiff and will take on the full management of the hotel on completion.

Cardiff council leader Rodney Berman said: “This hotel, which will be the tallest building in Wales, is another landmark for Cardiff and a striking addition to Cardiff’s International Sports Village (ISV).

“I am delighted that Wyndham has chosen Cardiff as the destination to develop such a prestigious business.

“This shows that, even in these difficult economic times, the Welsh capital is a desirable place for world-renown companies to invest in and this hotel is going to complement all the exciting elements being delivered in Cardiff Bay.”

Construction work on the hotel is due to start toward the end of the year, with completion two years later.

Construction group VINCI will partner with Bayscape on the scheme.
