The group, which has owned the site for 20 years, plans to transform it into a 227-bed four-star hotel, including restaurants, bar space and function rooms.
Last year, Britannia’s slow progress with the site led to council to threaten a compulsory purchase order. The council also held talks with developer Argent about a possible redevelopment of the site.
