BCSC 2015: Card shops, telecoms and gifts and accessories were the surprise winners on the high street in the year to the end of June, as the market showed further signs of recovery and the number of retail deals rose by 5%.
Gifts and accessories, boosted by the emergence of vaping shops, was the overall winner, with the number of deals rising by nearly a 1% according to EGi Retail Research. Telecoms, which grew by 0.95% in the 12 months, moved into the black for the first time since the recession.
Retail saviours of the downturn including supermarkets, restaurants, betting shops and value chains are showing signs of saturation as deals signed by the recession-busters slowed in the first half of the year.
Value shops dropped for the first time in three years, while coffee shops returned to a pre-recession share of deals.
Betting shop deals fell by almost two percentage points, while signings to supermarkets, restaurants and coffee shops all took a tumble.
