Hammerson signs £500m Sheffield deal

Hammerson has announced a development agreement with Sheffield council, boosting its £500m Sevenstone scheme.

The scheme was mothballed during the recession, but an agreement has now been signed and detailed plans are expected to be submitted later this year.

A 20-acre site in the city will now be turned into a retail complex anchored by John Lewis.

Hammerson had originally planned a £600m scheme with 860,000 sq ft of retail space, including the 269,000 sq ft John Lewis department store, about 100 shops and 200 flats.

The intended start date on the first phase had been set for last year, but the recession put a stop to the plans.

A Hammerson spokesman confirmed that the agreement had been signed last week, but declined to comment further before detailed plans had been submitted.
