Hackney planners object to Bishopsgate Goodsyard redevelopment

Planners at Hackney Council have objected to plans for a 500,000 sq ft-plus office development as part of the Bishopsgate Goodsyard project in east London.

The reserved matters application, put forward by a joint venture between Ballymore and Hammerson, is for plot 1 of the major mixed-use scheme and comprises an 18-storey office block, which crosses the borough boundary between Hackney and Tower Hamlets.

The planning committee said the quantum of office floor space in the proposals needed to be clarified and that “clear opportunities” had been missed in terms of sustainability and biodiversity.

The objection follows that of the planning committee at Tower Hamlets, which also recently rejected the proposals.

The reserved matters application is now with the Greater London Authority to determine.

The wider 11-acre site has consent for a 12-building development comprising more than 1,300 homes, close to 700,000 sq ft of offices and 175,000 sq ft of retail and leisure. It was granted consent in 2020.

DP9 is advising on planning.
