Hackney council to build 480 homes

Hackney council has submitted an EIA application for 480 homes, a new school and a leisure centre.

The plans will replace the Britannia Leisure centre next to Shoreditch Park, N1.

Residential towers of 20, 24 and 29 storeys are planned.

Hackney council will take on the development risk and build the scheme, with a construction start date set for Q2 2019.

Council documents state: “With the council acting as developer, the council will be directly procuring contractors to deliver the new school, council leisure centre and homes.

“In this way, the council will be able to ensure delivery in line with its high standards, retain ownership of the design and tenure mix, and enable the maximum benefit of the investment is directed in to the local area.”

The scheme will be built out in two phases, with the new school and leisure centre build out first, with the residential element following after.
