GlaxoSmithKline confirmed it would be closing its Speke plant on Merseyside.
The news came as the Wellcome Trust sold a £1.8bn holding in the pharmaceuticals giant, reducing its stake from 2.5% to 0.9%.
The trust has £13bn of assets which include property.
