Grosvenor Britain & Ireland has revealed its initial proposals for a redesign of Grosvenor Square, W1.
The estate launched a project to revamp the garden square, the capital’s second largest, in 2017, gathering feedback from more than 4,000 Londoners.
The new designs, from Tonkin Liu, focus on five themes: green in our cities; accessing the outdoors; spectacular horticulture and biodiversity; healthy places; and urban ecology.
The garden could be enlarged by some 32,000 sq ft, reintroducing an oval shape from the original design of the 1700s. The square would then have four “interlocking” gardens – corner gardens that act as gateways to the square, shaded tree-filled gardens at the edges, the open garden itself and a “hidden water garden” within the square.
Ed Green, senior development manager at Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, said: “The proposals… show how garden squares can play their part in tackling the climate emergency, by bringing as much nature and biodiversity to the site as physically possible while addressing the issues that are important for multiple generations of visitors.”
Grosvenor is now asking for feedback on the proposals.
