Grosvenor has received planning permission to refurbish and extend an office building at 7 Holbein Place, SW1, in order to reduce its carbon footprint.
The façade of the 1980s building in Belgravia will be retained, greening introduced and low embodied carbon products used, including Cemfree concrete and Thermalite aircrete blockwork.
In addition, opportunities to recycle steel are being explored and cross-laminated timber will be used in the creation of the one-storey extension.
Designed by Barr Gazetas, the building will become all-electric and have on-site renewable energy generation capabilities, blue roofs and sustainable urban drainage systems.
It is expected that the refurbishment will meet the LETI Pioneer Project embodied carbon target of 500kg of CO2 per sq m.
Philip George, project director at Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, said: “We have pushed every opportunity to make this a highly sustainable office environment without compromising on comfort, or the experience, of future occupiers.
“We are proud that this will become GBI’s most sustainable office building and a benchmark for building adaptation and retrofit in London.”
