Greggs picks Currie to lead next course

Greggs’ property boss Roisin Currie will become the steak bake seller’s next chief executive.

Currie currently holds the position of retail and property director, with responsibility for Greggs’ retail operations across the UK and its central support team.

She also leads the development of Greggs’ shop estate and its growing delivery business, in partnership with Just Eat. Prior to joining Greggs in 2010, she worked at Asda.

Currie will take the helm at the company’s AGM in May this year and will officially become CEO designate and an executive director on 1 February.

Current boss Roger Whiteside announced his intention to retire in 2020.

Greggs has also committed to its plans to open 150 more stores over the next year. In a trading update for the fourth quarter, the company said that total sales for 2021 had returned to pre-pandemic levels, reaching £1.23bn.

Whiteside said: “We have a strong pipeline of new shop opportunities and expect to open around 150 net new stores in the year ahead.”

Last year it opened 131 stores and closed 28, growing the estate to 2,181 shops.

Whiteside added that Greggs had cash of £198m. “This strong financial position will allow us to invest in the multiple attractive opportunities for significant further growth. These include our ambitions to accelerate the rate of growth in our shop estate while developing new digital channels and extending the trading day.”
