Greenwich council selects resi developer for Woolwich Leisure Centre scheme

Greenwich Council has named the Hill Group as its development partner for the Woolwich Leisure Centre scheme.

The development at General Gordon Square, in Woolwich town centre, will provide a new leisure centre and 500 new homes.

Hill Group will be responsible for residential, which will include private and affordable housing, including 51 social rented homes, which will be leased to the council. The homes will be built behind the centre, between Vincent Road and Wilmount Street, SE18.

The new facility will provide a 25m swimming pool, a water slide, spa, gym and additional shops, restaurants and public spaces, with the refurbishment of the Tramshed theatre and arts centre. It is expected to open in 2024 and will replace the old Waterfront Leisure Centre (pictured) next to Woolwich Pier.

Denise Scott-McDonald, deputy leader at Greenwich Council, said: “Building a state-of-the-art leisure centre in the heart of Woolwich will bring residents back into the town centre throughout the week and have a positive knock-on effect as more people spend their money and time in the area.”

Anthony Okereke, cabinet member for housing, added: “Like every other borough in London, we are facing an unprecedented housing crisis and we are doing everything we can to tackle it. Our Woolwich Leisure Centre Scheme will deliver hundreds of much-needed flats and houses in a range of sizes, including homes for families.”
