The station will generate 49 megawatts of power and supply electricity to more than 50,000 homes. It is estimated that it will cut the region’s carbon emissions by 80%.
Other designs by Heatherwick, who is known for his innovative approach and wide range, includes the British Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo 2010, Longchamp’s flagship store in SoHo, New York, a ‘rolling’ bridge at Paddington Basin in west London, and workshops and studios for Aberystwyth university’s arts centre.
Heatherwick also designed a landmark sculpture to commemorate the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. However, the sculpture has been dogged by safety fears even since one of its spikes fell off.
