Developer Chord Deeley has won planning consent for the largest development in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter for 20 years.
The 750,000 sq ft St Georges scheme comprises 93,500 sq ft of offices, 700 homes, 12,320 sq ft of bars and restaurants, 24,470 sq ft of retail, two hotels – the first in the district – and a multi-storey car park.
The 2.75ha/6.8 acre site, bounded by Icknield Street, Camden Street and Carver Street and incorporating Pope Street and Moreton Street, is one of the biggest development sites in Birmingham.
A 151-bedroom Ramada Encore hotel is to be built on the corner of Icknield Street and Pope Street. A second hotel, comprising 100 bedrooms, is also planned for the site.
A joint venture between Alfred McAlpine/New World Leisure will develop and operate the hotels.
Many of the buildings on the site are derelict or in a poor state of repair. None of the buildings are listed, though Chord Deeley will retain the former Swan kitchenware factory – which dates back to 1890.
Work will start on site this summer. The first phase will house the Ramada Encore hotel, 26,600 sq ft of offices, plus 8,800 sq ft of retail space and a 237 space multi-storey car park. The whole development will be completed by 2012.
Wright Silverwood is letting agent for the retail and leisure space. Urban Initiatives designed the masterplan.
