Green light for £75m Brum hotel and mixed-use scheme

Irish developer Manor Park Developments has gained consent for a £75m hotel and mixed-use development close to the Mailbox scheme in Birmingham.

The 25-storey D5 Architects-designed Queensgate development includes a 259-bedroom hotel and 144-bedroom apart-hotel. The name of the hotel operator is expected to be announced shortly.

Associated company New Manor Developments hopes to begin construction in March 2011 with completion scheduled for early 2013.

Mike Coffey, managing director of New Manor Developments, said: “This is great news – not just for the parties involved but for Birmingham as well. These aren’t pie in the sky proposals.  We’ve a long-term lease already signed with leading European serviced-apartment operator, StayCity.”

Andrew Fowler, property director for StayCity, said: “Choosing Queensgate was an easy decision because of its prime location – a moment’s walk from the soon to be refurbished New Street Station.”
