Green light expected for Watkin Jones’s 784-bed Glasgow PBSA scheme

Watkin Jones Group has received a resolution to grant planning permission to develop a 784-bed purpose-built student accommodation scheme at former HMRC building Portcullis House at 21 India Street in Glasgow.

If approved, the new development will be called the Àrd. It will regenerate the brownfield site and includes the partial demolition of the existing building and part-retention of the existing concrete frame.

Watkin Jones’s plans include developing two buildings of 36 and 10 storeys. The scheme will also accommodate Glasgow Social Enterprise Network on the ground floor free of charge.

The plans were filed in December last year. Watkin Jones’s proposals will also provide secure storage for 390 cycles at basement level. Other amenities includes games rooms, screen rooms, co-working spaces, lounge areas, a yoga/spin studio, a gym, a social kitchen, private dining space, a quiet study area and an art studio.

Glasgow Social Enterprise Network will use the space for a variety of purposes, including providing training opportunities for both social enterprises and students, as well as delivering a technology recycling programme, offering free or low-cost tech to students and social enterprises, serving to reduce tech waste.

Glasgow City Council will discuss the application in a planning meeting next week.
