Go-ahead for Devon new town

Sherford

Red Tree has been given the green light for a new community in Sherford, near Plymouth in Devon.

Plans include: 5,500 new homes, 721,205 sq ft of business and commercial space, 180,193 sq ft of retail, community and open space facilities, three primary schools and one secondary school, a health centre and a 511-acre community park.

South Hams council’s development control committee passed a resolution to grant yesterday, following permission from Plymouth and Devon councils and four years of negotiations and public consultation.

The development is part of the Sherford Area Action Plan issued in October 2004, which was adopted in August 2007

James Koe, partner at Red Tree, said:  “A proposal on this scale is a major undertaking and has involved the engagement of an enormous number of individuals and groups all of whom have committed time, skill and patience to the challenge.

“The process is far from over and we look forward to moving into the next phase of this project and are keeping the door to positive involvement firmly open.”

Red Tree will now agree detailed plans with the three councils, and subject to getting final planning, development could start on site at the end of this year.

Red Tree is a single purpose vehicle established to develop Sherford.

It is a partnership of the Royal Bank of Scotland, planning group Scott Wilson and development group Cannon Kirk Developments, with support from charity The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment.
