Go-ahead for Brum Newtown scheme

Birmingham council has given the go-ahead for an affordable housing scheme in the city’s Newtown district.

Midland Heart, the Birmingham-based housing association, will build 125 flats and 42 townhouses at the site of the former Crocodile Works factory in Alma Street.

The consent is subject to a legal agreement to be issued this week.

The Crocodile Works site will form the initial phase of the Pathfinder Housing Renewal Area.  It will be led by Midland Heart and funded through a combination of Housing Corporation and Urban Living funds.

Louise Brooke Smith, director of planning consultancy CSJ Brooke Smith, said the application had been protracted and challenging. “Some of the original buildings on the site are locally listed and deemed worthy of retention so we had to prepare a planning application that was sensitive to the area’s industrial history and architectural importance,” she said.
