Glenn Howells appointed at Newbury Racecourse

Newbury Racecourse and joint venture partner David Wilson Homes have appointed Glenn Howells Architects to produce detailed designs for the redevelopment of the historic Berkshire racecourse.

The appointment paves the way for building work to start next summer on the scheme.

Outline consent was granted in January, more than four years after work on the proposals began. A year of design work is now underway.

The project will eventually see 1500 homes built at Newbury Racecourse, a move that is thought to be unprecented among other horse racing venues across the UK.

A 120-bedroom hotel will also be added to boost income at the site, where racing takes place on only 30 days a year.

Access to the racecourse will be improved with a new bridge and a more impressive entrance will be built to create a “sense of arrival”.
