Glasgow 2014 to launch hunt for Commonwealth Games developer

Glasgow 2014, the operating body tasked with delivering the infrastructure for the 2014 Commonweath Games, will launch a developer competition at the beginning of next year for the £245m Commonwealth Games village.

The village in Dalmarnock on the banks of the River Clyde will provide 1,200 apartments for around 6,500 athletes and officials during the Games before being made available for sale or for social rented accommodation.

RMJM Architects has designed the masterplan for the site. A committee, including a chairman and chief executive, will be created at the start of next year, after which the developer competition will be launched.

Companies expected to bid for the opportunity include Quintain, Kier Residential and Urban Splash.

Glasgow 2014 denied it had been approached by developers already about the opportunity.

A spokesman for Glasgow 2014 said it was “impossible” for any developer to have made an approach regarding the development of the Commonwealth Games village at this point.

He said: “There is no one for anyone to come forward to because no organising committee has yet been formed.”
