Genr8 Kajima and Newcastle University to develop campus for ageing and vitality

Genr8 Kajima Regeneration and Newcastle University have partnered to transform a former general hospital site in the city’s West End into a centre for research and innovation in ageing and living well.

The £500m scheme, developed with GSS Architecture, was granted outline planning permission from Newcastle City Council in February.

The 29-acre site, owned by Newcastle University, will provide new specialist housing, workspace and research and healthcare facilities.

This is the first scheme awarded to Genr8 Kajima, which was formed in 2021 through the 50/50 partnership of pan-European asset manager Kajima and regeneration developer Genr8.

Kate Pix, regeneration director at Kajima, said: “If we are to level up the country, we can’t simply build more homes. We also need to rethink how we use existing places, particularly those with in-built community benefits such as health facilities, life sciences [premises] and other social infrastructure.”
