Future Leaders 2023: Landsec’s Georgie Manly

Landsec retail customer propositions director Georgie Manly is a rule-breaker.

She doesn’t like colouring inside the lines. She does like wearing yellow socks. This is a woman with a creative spirit and she chose to use her EG Future Leaders talk to help showcase why real estate needs to unleash its creative side in a much more powerful way.

“We have a situation in our industry where we have cookie-cutter spaces,” said Manly.

“We have cookie-cutter places that look the same, that feel the same and operate the same. And this is not good because we are failing to give people new experiences, new places to come to, and this is affecting our bottom line because people don’t want to spend their money and they don’t want to spend their time with us.”

“Everyone can be creative. It’s not just for the fine artists. Everyone in this room can be creative. You can apply creative thinking to any of your solutions”

We have got into this situation because creatives and rule-followers are locked in battle. For Manly, we stop that battle and unlock opportunity by zooming out and having an elevated vision.

“You need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable,” she said.

“You need to be able to take yourself out of your comfort box and step into a new environment. Look at new people, look into new spaces and challenge your thoughts, challenge your peers.

“In that stage it is uncomfortable, but you start to begin to create new solutions that you would never have thought you would do in that box you would have sat in.”

In her talk, Manly explained how creative thinking has enabled valuable solutions, from creating great places, to unlocking resources where it looked like there were none, and delivering the best outcomes for communities.
