Fujifilm proposes £400m bio campus expansion

Tokyo-based conglomerate Fujifilm is pressing on with an expansion of its existing bio campus at Billingham, Teesside.

Last year Fujifilm allocated a £400m investment package to double the manufacturing facility, which supports the development of gene therapy, biologics and vaccine candidates.

The company has identified a 7.7-acre plot of land opposite the campus, which was formerly used as a football pitch by Billingham Synthonia FC, for a potential expansion.

Lichfields, on behalf of Fujifilm, has lodged plans to Stockton-on-Tees County Council for a new 373,185 sq ft scheme. The main building, designed by Ryder Architecture, would extend to around 288,473 sq ft over three floors, featuring production suites, a work-in-progress warehouse and storage, buffer preparation and hold facilities, labs and offices.

The remaining space will be dedicated to a gatehouse, liquid waste treatment plant, solid waste management building, landscaping, parking and service areas.

The proposed development is seeking to achieve a BREEAM “very good” rating.

If approved, the expansion of the campus is expected to create up to 350 jobs and become operational by early 2024.
