A former public toilet block close to the harbour in Newlyn, Cornwall, sparked a bidding frenzy at Clive Emson’s latest sale. It sold on behalf of Cornwall Council for £73,000 off a guide of £15,000-plus.
The auction house raised a total of £16m across five venues in five days from 10-14 September. The 155-lot catalogue also included an equestrian centre with residential redevelopment potential at Ewhurst, near Cranleigh, Surrey, which sold for £521,000.
Other highlights included:
- A 1960s-built former pump house measuring just 19ft x 12ft in East Farleigh, near Maidstone, Kent. The development potential spurred interest, leading to a sale at £40,000.
- A three-bedroom detached chalet on the seafront and with access to the beach in Jaywick, near Clacton, Essex, sold for £60,000.
Managing director James Emson said: “There is no doubt that we are facing challenging conditions for a number of reasons, however, the property and land auction market has been consistently cyclical over a great many years, with peaks and troughs always to be expected.”
