Plans for a 35-storey residential tower and new leisure centre in Elephant & Castle, SE1, will go out for public consultation this weekend.
Lend Lease’s proposed 300-flat tower with shops and cafés at ground level at St Mary’s Churchyard will help fund a new leisure centre to be developed by Southwark council and its partner, 4 Futures.
Detailed plans for the tower and leisure centre at the 2.2-acre site will be lodged in the summer with the aim of completing development by spring 2014.
The site sits on the opposite side of the Elephant & Castle roundabout from Lend Lease’s £1.5bn Heygate Estate development.
Councillor Fiona Colley, cabinet member for regeneration at Southwark council, said: “The new leisure centre promises to be a very high-quality facility, in the heart of Elephant and Castle’s regeneration area, with a brand new 25m pool.”
Lend Lease project director Rob Deck said the desire to make the leisure centre happen had helped the residential scheme to be brought forward.
Deck added: “We are very excited about this scheme and what it will bring to the regeneration of Elephant & Castle.”
