EG launches 2023 student essay competition

EG has launched its 2023 student essay competition, inviting all those on apprenticeships or studying a real estate course at undergraduate or postgraduate level to respond to the question:

“As an agile developer, how would you create opportunity out of repurposing an underutilised commercial office block above disused retail space in an urban high street? Would you change its use? If so, what to and why?”

In no more than 1,200 words, entrants should explain how both the office and the retail space could be retrofitted. Consideration should also be given to how the roof space could be utilised. It might, for example, be an opportunity to create residential accommodation, or to incorporate a vertical farm or roof-top growing to promote urban food security.

Implications of the proposed repurposing should be explained from a planning, property asset/investment class perspective as well as from a wider social, environmental and economic perspective. The plan should balance the need to generate appropriate returns with the reduction of operational emissions.

The winning essay, along with two runners up, will be published in EG. The winner will also receive a year’s free subscription to the digital edition of EG, mentoring from one of the industry judges, and £250 in vouchers. Mentoring will also be available for the two runners up.

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday 19 June. All submissions will be reviewed by our panel, with the winner announced in EG on 15 July.
