Edinburgh city council is to release 435 acres of greenbelt land for housing as part of its local development plan.
The council hopes that by opening up swathes of land up to 5,100 new homes can be built across the city.
A report recommending approval of the LDP will be considered by the council’s planning committee next Tuesday. A consultation period will then start on 1 May for six weeks.
The LDP states that future growth should be focused on four strategic development areas. These are the city centre, the waterfront regeneration area in the north of the city, west Edinburgh close to the airport and south east Edinburgh.
The local development plan covers a period of 10 years starting from 2015 and includes sites that could house between 3,750 and 5,080 new homes.
The plan also states that all schemes of 12 homes or more must include 25% affordable housing.
Between 2,250 and 3,200 new homes are earmarked for west Edinburgh, while south-east Edinburgh is expected to get between 1,625 and 2,275 new homes as well as new business developments.
