East London data centre given go-ahead

Tower Hamlets Council has given data centre operator Global Switch approval for a new block at its east London campus.

The company will develop a 290,000 sq ft data centre at its site by East India Dock House in Poplar, E14. The campus already includes two data centres. The new building, known as London South, will be linked by bridge to Global Switch’s existing London East building.

Councillors have followed their planning officers’ recommendation and approved the scheme.

Planning documents from architect TTSP said: “The importance of data centres in this location cannot be understated as the site sits within a state-of-the-art data centre environment close to the City and Docklands, with its wealth of carriers and cloud providers.”
