Dubai’s newest skyscraper, which is set to become the world’s tallest building when completed in 2020, “pushes the limits” of what can be achieved in property, according to the scheme’s architect.
World-renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava has designed the Tower, which will stand “a notch taller” than Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, which is currently the world’s tallest structure.
Calatrava told EG that the Tower, which is part of the sprawling 6 sq km regeneration project Dubai Creek Harbour, reflects an “ambition and vision of the future that Dubai and the UAE is an all-important place”.
Calatrava was also selected to design the UAE pavilion at the international showcase Expo 2020 in Dubai. His design for the 161,000 sq ft exhibition space was modelled on birds’ wings.
“Together, the pavilion, a place of gathering and welcoming, and the tower, a landmark so technically daring and commanding, says, ‘Everyone should know we exist, we are here, and we are a universal place, where 60% of people are foreigners, and the world is welcome’,” he said.
Speaking about Dubai Creek Harbour developers Emaar Properties and Dubai Holding, Calatrava said: “The technical language of the Tower is pushed into the limits of technology and it is extraordinary to find a place and a client willing to do that.”
