Property’s Great British Brexit Cook Off
There was a Euro-themed storm whipped up at Tuffin Ferraby Taylor’s Great Brexit Cook Off last week.
Two teams of property professionals went head to head in the kitchen of L’Atelier des Chefs, St Paul’s, during a cooking class inspired by the referendum.
But with seven days to go until the (now decided) vote, options were kept firmly open by cooking courses from France, Spain and Britain.
To celebrate industry charity LandAid’s 30th anniversary, attendees were also invited to take part in a unique raffle. They had the choice of buying either a novelty £20 or €20 note, bearing the faces of TFT partners David Mann and Alan Pemberton respectively.
The raffle raised £520 for LandAid and when the votes were counted, the budding cooks had voted 16 to nine to Bremain.
Pedal power to Paris
Some 270 miles were pedalled over three days by a team of cyclists from Hyde Group Housing Association, starting at Greenwich Park, SE10, and finishing at Arc De Triomphe in Paris, and raising over £50,000 for Hyde Charitable Trust.
The trust funds programmes that offer life-changing activities and help for vulnerable families and communities across London and the South East.
The charitable ride was supported by Chartway Group, which donated £15,000 to the cause.
Students get stuck in
CALA Homes (East) has partnered with The Prince’s Trust to give local disadvantaged and unemployed young people an opportunity to develop new skills and get hands-on work experience.
Aged between 18 and 25, 10 students completed a Get Into Construction programme run by The Prince’s Trust in partnership with CALA and Edinburgh College to secure an apprenticeship with the homebuilder.
The course provided basic construction skills training, careers advice and vocational experience at CALA developments across Edinburgh.
David McGrath, managing director for CALA Homes (East), said: “CALA is delighted to work with the Prince’s Trust, offering young people the opportunity to learn about the construction industry. The industry needs new talent if we are to address the national shortage in skilled trades and to have had such a positive response to the scheme is fantastic.”
Property prepares for Propski – as event set to move to Tignes
A snowboard simulator set in an industrial yard in south-east London set the mood for another round of Propski fun, as the next instalment of the property networking event in the Alps was launched last week.
Propski devotees from industry sectors, colleagues and friends, and new committee members gathered for the shindig at Bermondsey Yard Café, SE1, to learn that the ever-growing event will be moving to the French Alpine resort of Tignes in January. Val Thorens has been its home for the past few years.
Last year Estates Gazette, which is the media partner for Propski, hosted its highest, in terms of elevation, Question Time debate at the property gathering, and 250 delegates took part in a chain of other high-altitude events over either three or seven-day stays. More than £10,000 was raised for LandAid. Next year’s event takes place from 14 to 21 January.
Racing around Brixton
London estate agents raced to raise £11,200 for Brixton-based charity Housing for Women in a 10k run at Regents Park, NW1.
The event, in its third year, was organised by Housing for Women. The charity houses and supports vulnerable women and their children in London.
Some of the agents that supported the event included Currell, Fine & Country, Marsh & Parsons, Chelsea Square, Winkworth, Stirling Ackroyd and Hamways.
Moore freestyles to Euro Masters
Bilfinger GVA associate Andrew Moore made a big splash in the European Masters Championships that took place at the London Aquatics Centre, E20.
Moore was victorious on the international stage in two swimming events, finishing in 10th place in the 100m freestyle and taking 11th position in the 50m freestyle.
With his sights now set on Budapest for the World Championships, Moore will be aiming to take on more global competitors in 2017.
Battling it out in Rollapaluza
Custom House Quays, Dublin, was the setting for the battle of the bikes event hosted by WK Nowlan.
The cycle challenge saw 20 teams from companies including AIB, Arthur Cox and Kennedy Wilson take on the Rollapaluza cycle, a fixed-rig sprint cycle challenge where competitors compete to be the fastest over 500 metres.
The event raised more than €20,000 (£15,400) for Dublin’s Crumlin Children’s Hospital.
KPMG was crowned champions in the team event. Individual winner spots were awarded to Pól O Maolagáin from Mulcahy, McDonagh & Partners for fastest male, and Jenny Barrett from Custom House Quays for fastest female.
