Crown jewels deliver for Clive Emson

Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers raised £18m over five days with its first collection of sales for 2019.

The auctioneer successfully sold 70% of 116 lots on offer.

Standout sales across the five auctions included an old NatWest bank in Chard, Somerset, which sold for £211,000. Its huge underground, bombproof vaults measuring a 4,000 sq ft are bigger than that the whole of the three storeys of the bank itself. They are said to have stored vital documents, the Bank of England’s reserve supply of banknotes and the Crown Jewels during the war.

Managing director James Emson said: “The sale of the former bank is just one example of the incredible range of lots we offer on a regular basis across the south of England.

“This variety has given us an excellent start to the year and we now look forward to March when our service to clients will be further augmented by new technological innovation.

“Strong bidding in all our salerooms was evidenced by the excellent sales achieved on many of the lots, proving that the auction process is a fantastic way to balance both buyer and seller expectations.”

Other highlights of the sale included a Grade II listed commercial investment property in Canterbury city centre, which sold for £2.1m; five houses on the Isle of Wight, which raised £655,000; and a 0.36-acre overgrown parcel of land in Grays, Essex, which sold for £450,000.

Clive Emson’s next sales take place between 18 and 22 March in Chelmsford, Maidstone, Brighton, Saltash and Fareham.
