Countryside Properties and London & Quadrant have been given the go ahead for a £1bn mixed-use scheme in Chelmsford, Essex.
The scheme, which will see the creation of 3,600 homes and 670,000 sq ft of commercial space, including a 430,000 sq ft business park, on a 610 acre site, was approved last night.
Plans also include a new railway station on the East Anglia mainline.
The housing will be a mixture of tenure but with an emphasis on family homes and provision for 970 affordable homes.
Countryside chief executive Graham Cherry said: “This decision is the first step towards new homes, new jobs, and new infrastructure which will really take the new city of Chelmsford to the next level. Our vision is of a sustainable community, designed to the highest standards, with an unique sense of place and landscape. This major new neighbourhood guarantees huge benefits for the whole of Chelmsford.
“We are looking forward to working with the city and county council to enable us to start on site in autumn 2013.”
