Workers in London would do better in financial terms to live outside the capital and commute an hour to their jobs, but for those in Birmingham and Manchester the opposite is the case, research by Lloyds Bank has shown.
Even taking the cost of travel into account, people working in London could be £300,000 better off over the course of a 30-year career if they avoid the capital and its high property prices.
In Birmingham and Manchester, however, prices for properties in the suburbs are higher than in the city centre.
