Colliers to study Rotherham’s retail and leisure needs

Rotherham metropolitan borough council has appointed Colliers International to conduct a retail and leisure study of the town in South Yorkshire following a competitive tender.

The study will provide an evidence base for the Rotherham local development gramework, which will cover the period up to 2027. It will also inform any retail policies and proposals that come out as a result of the framework.

The study will give the council a comprehensive understanding of the key issues surrounding the borough’s retail and leisure provision and the need for additional development.

Councillor Gerald Smith, cabinet member for regeneration and environment for the council, said: “As Rotherham changes over the next 15 years, we need to ensure that we can meet our shopping and leisure needs. This study will be vital in helping us understand how things might change and making sure that our planning decisions are based on the most up-to-date information possible.”

Dr. Richard Doidge, head of research and consulting at Colliers International, said: “Last year we conducted a retail and leisure study of Rotherham town centre and this will provide an excellent starting point for carrying out this expanded borough-wide study.  Rotherham has been subject to changing national retail and leisure market trends over the last 20 years, as well as experiencing the localised effects of the nearby Meadowhall shopping centre and Retail World.  We anticipate that this borough study will supply the MBC with invaluable information that will prove vital to Rotherham’s future retail success.”
