BCO 2012 Successful cities in the future will be digitally intelligent, knowledge-based and require strong partnerships between the public and private sectors, Manchester council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein told the BCO conference this morning.
Opening the event, Sir Howard said Manchester was ranked 67th in the top cities in the world, but would need to “be better and move fast to maintain our position”.
“Successful cities are going to be smart ones that invest in the future, are knowledge-based and recognise the marketplace we’re in is changing,” he said.
Pointing to the growth of China and the competitive threat to Europe, he said: “What we’ve seen in the past is only going to become more intensified.”
