The 152-year-old Guards Chapel at the centre of the £3bn Chelsea Barracks scheme has been given Grade II listed status.
A spokesman for Qatari Diar said the decision to protect the chapel provided “much needed certainty” for proposals for the site, which have been redrawn to retain the chapel.
In 2009, campaigners unsuccessfully called for the chapel to be listed, before Prince Charles voiced his objection to the plans.
In February, Boris Johnson gave Qatari Diar qualified backing for its plans to redevelop the former Chelsea Barracks site. The London mayor supports the masterplan in principle but he has asked for further detail on extra affordable housing in the scheme.
