Construction engineering company nmcn has published its first children’s story book, When I Grow Up, to inspire young people to consider a career in the construction industry.
The book, which is aimed at children aged between four and seven, was created to help address the skills crisis in the sector. It is part of nmcn’s “positive impact plan” to engage with at least 5,000 children by 2025 and encourage the industry’s next generation of workers.
The free book was launched on World Book Day, 5 March, at St Mary Magdalene primary school in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, and has been recognised by celebrity architect George Clarke and BBC’s DIY SOS star Billy Byrne. All donations raised will go to nmcn’s corporate charity partner Mind.
Author, nmcn business development director Rich Smith, said: “We wanted to use the book as a fun and engaging way to educate children on the broad opportunities the construction sector has to offer and show that it is an industry that can appeal to both girls and boys. We hope to inspire young people and encourage them to consider the construction industry.
Homeless are winners in Everton night-time fixture
Matthew & Goodman’s Chris Hennessy, Tom Parry and Gabriel Davies have raised more than £1,400 for Everton in the Community’s “Home is where the heart is” campaign. The trio took part in the in the annual Goodison Sleepout, where players and backroom staff join supporters in braving the elements at Everton FC’s Goodison Park ground.
The campaign supports 16-23-year-olds who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
RICS shortlists Strawberry Field scheme
The Salvation Army’s redevelopment of the Strawberry Field site in Woolton, Liverpool has been shortlisted in the RICS Social Impact Awards – North West, in the education and leisure categories. The inaugural awards recognise the built environment’s positive and transformational contribution to society.
The landmark scheme, on the site made famous by the Beatles, was designed by Hoskins Architects, managed by property and construction consultancy Gleeds, and delivered by contractor Robertson.
The winner will be announced on 24 April at The Principal Manchester.
Six of the best benefit from AA Projects’ generosity
AA Projects has donated a share of £6,000 to six charities nominated by staff. As part of the firm’s social value strategy, funding was allocated by a token-based voting system and gifted to the Alzheimer’s Society, Bliss, Brain Tumour Research across Yorkshire, British Heart Foundation, Millie’s Trust and the MS Society.
