Campaigners exercise ‘right to roam’ over environment minister’s estate

More than 100 Morris dancers and ramblers dressed as sheep invaded an environment minister’s estate at the weekend.

The Right to Roam campaigners entered the Englefield Estate in west Berkshire, calling for more land to be opened up for public access. The owner of the 12,000-acre estate, Richard Benyon, is minister for access to nature.

The group estimates that only about 8% of the countryside and 3% of rivers are accessible to all.

The protesters point out that, like many of the decision-makers in parliament, Benyon owns land so he is perhaps unlikely to act against the interests of large private landowners.
