The government has announced plans to redress the current “major disparity” between economic growth in the regions via a series of measures in its emergency Budget.

The government will publish a White Paper on housing in the summer aimed at promoting regional growth. A consultation paper on Northern Ireland will be published later.

It also plans to support regions that are currently dependent on the public sector for growth committing to a number of major transport initiatives. It will commit to an upgrade of the Tyne and Wear Metro and the Greater Manchester Metrolink as well as transport networks in Sheffield, Liverpool and Leeds.

It will create a regional growth fund committing capital to regional growth projects.
