Developer Brookhouse Group has signed a partnership with electric vehicle charging provider Engenie to install rapid charging points across all of its shopping locations.
The partnership, thought to be the largest of its kind in the UK, will install 17 Engenie rapid chargers across 10 locations.
It is estimated the initiative will prevent an estimated 16 tonnes of NO from UK roads, and more than 20,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Each charging site will be powered by 100% renewable energy.
Seven charging sites, hosting a total of 13 rapid chargers, are already open to the public. These are:
- Meteor Shopping Park, Bournemouth
- Canal Road, Bradford
- Manchester Road Shopping Park, Stockport
- Queens Shopping Park, Preston
- Parsonage Retail Park, Leigh
- Barnfield Retail Park, Chichester
- Alexandra Retail Park, Oldham
The remaining three locations – North Quay Retail Park in Lowestoft, Cables Shopping Park in Prescot and Hamilton Shopping Park, Hamilton – will complete before the end of the year.
Engenie said more than 18m vehicles visit the sites each year.
Mike Nuttall, property director at Brookhouse, said: “The way we travel is changing like never before and already we are seeing a wholesale shift towards electric mobility.
“Customers will expect to be able to charge their vehicles wherever they shop and our tenants will expect us to provide the infrastructure which enables them to do so.”
Engenie’s other deals in the retail park sector include partnerships with Reef, M7 and Northumberland Estates.
The provider plans to double the number of rapid chargers in the UK by 2024.
Patrick Sherriff, business development director at Engenie, said: “The market for on-site EV charging services at retail parks is primed for rapid growth as EVs hit the mass market and on-site destination charging becomes an essential offering.”
