Bristol beckons hipsters

Could Bristol be pulling the hipsters out of London?

With Somo Global opening its new Bristol HQ last week and a recent Tech Nation report labelling the city as the largest digital cluster in the UK outside of London, will the hipsters flock west?

Invest Bristol and Bath has eased tech occupiers into 100,000 sq ft of office space in the past two years and hopes for a further 60,000 sq ft in the short term.

The city has a thriving tech and creative industry cluster, and a strong argument for a better quality of life, as tech firm Somo Global has found out.

The firm has taken 4,000 sq ft at Aberdeen Asset Management’s One Redcliff Street, a 140,000 sq ft refurbished 1960s office block.

Chief business officer James Turner says expanding into Bristol was a natural next step for the group. “We will expand the engineering side of the business in Bristol, rather than in the capital,” he adds.

Meanwhile, online takeaway ordering service Just Eat as signed a 10-year lease for the 10,057 sq ft second floor at Broad Quay House on Prince Street.

Bristol has about 150,000 sq ft of older office space now subject to appraisals that would command rents in the low £20 per sq ft bracket, says JLL’s Jeremy Richards.
