Brighton Gasworks plans refused

Brighton & Hove City Council has rejected plans for a mixed-use development at the former Brighton Gasworks site.

The decision went against an officer recommendation for approval, with three councillors voting in favour of the scheme and seven against.

The development on the National Grid-owned land proposed a mixed-use scheme with 495 homes and 30,000 sq ft of commercial space across buildings ranging from three to 12 storeys.

Liz Loughran, chair of the council’s planning committee, said: “Although the committee formed a judgement that many of the elements of the scheme were positive, members were not satisfied that the balance of benefits outweighed the harms.

“We have seen and heard a lot of evidence both for and against the Brighton Gasworks scheme, but ultimately the planning committee had too many concerns to approve this application. Further improvements are required to address the design issues for this site that also affect the quality of living conditions for future residents.”
