Briefing: Housing, we have a problem

The-REview-logoThe UK’s housing problem is just that, a problem. And it will remain that way, according to the majority of you. This month’s REview survey, supported by Trowers & Hamlins, showed that more than 76% of respondents believed that government would not give housing provision the attention it required, with almost 65% saying the return of a Conservative government did not offer the best chance for the housing crisis to be resolved.

A further 82% of respondents said the Tories would fail to deliver on their manifesto promise of delivering 200,000 starter homes by 2020, with more than half saying the current administration will fall far short.

REview-Trowers-&-hamlinsTonia Secker, real estate partner at Trowers & Hamlins, said: “The view of the industry seems to be that the greatest obstacle to the delivery  of new homes is not the lack of funding but the planning system, although a quarter cite a lack of public sector commitment.”

“To imagine that this number of sites, infrastructure, remediation, design and planning processes, procurements and full construction can be achieved within five years will require a quick start, and I don’t yet see that.”

“Young people wanting their own home are the most disadvantaged on the housing ladder and owning is better than renting, as pride in ownership ensures better care of housing and the surroundings.”
