Bricks & Mortar: Careers trilogy, episode 3: Succeeding at the interview stage

LISTEN: In this final instalment of EG’s careers trilogy, Bricks & Mortar host Sarah Jackman is joined for a final time by Nick Carman – partnership director at Macdonald & Company, a specialist recruitment consultancy for the real estate and built environment sectors – for a look at how to succeed at the interview stage.

Carman discusses the three different types of interview – traditional, behavioural and competency – and sets out what to expect from each and how to prepare accordingly, while emphasising the need to deliver answers succinctly on the day.

Although much of the focus for the interview will be on finding out whether the interviewee is the best person for the role, Carman reminds listeners that it’s also an opportunity for the interviewee to find out more about the potential employer. He suggests making the most of asking questions and trying to gain an understanding of what it would be like to work there.

To round off the series, Carman talks through the second interview and how it might differ from the first, before reiterating the importance of following up to get feedback and contacting the interviewers personally if unsuccessful.

Tune in to Bricks & Mortar in a fortnight to hear Vanessa Hale, Yohance Harper and Mo O’Connell discuss the value of mentoring and ULI’s mentoring programme.
