Bricks and Mortar: Soft skills are key to professional development

Starting out in industry can be bewildering. Aside from learning the day-to-day practicalities of the role, young professionals need to get to grips with a range of soft skills – some of which may be easier to grasp than others.

As part of EG’s new podcast series – Bricks and Mortar – which covers topics relevant to those just starting out in the property world, EG speaks to Nicky Richmond, managing partner and head of training at West End law firm Brecher.

After more than 30 years as a property lawyer, Nicky has an array of tips and advice to share on subjects that she mentors in from how to manage difficult clients, to marketing yourself effectively, working a room, delegating and managing e-mail overload.

She also offers advice on managing social media effectively and reinforces the need to be present and focused in the workplace.

And while she acknowledges that mentoring isn’t for everyone, she offers a few words of encouragement to those who would like to try it: “It is one of the very most rewarding things that you can do in the office.”
