Bricks and Mortar: How to choose the right career in real estate

From building surveying to rural surveying, the possibilities in real estate are endless. But if you’re considering a career in real estate, how do you make sense of the opportunities available?

Paul Collins, senior lecturer at the department of property management and development at Nottingham Trent University and EG’s Mainly for Students editor, provides advice on how to match an interest in real estate to a particular course, honing in on a professional pathway and the benefits of taking a sandwich year in industry – either here or abroad.

He also explains how apprenticeships works, and what the benefits of entering the profession via that route are.

He encourages all students – whether following the undergraduate route or the apprenticeship route – to read widely, explore the various pathways available to them, engage in dialogue with real estate professionals and to start looking ahead to the APC by familiarising themselves with the mandatory competencies.
