There was further indigestion in the casual dining sector yesterday when Boparan Restaurant Group said that up to 27 of its 70 Giraffe and Ed’s Easy Diner outlets would close.
The cuts, via a company voluntary arrangement, put 340 of 1,300 jobs at risk. Twenty Giraffe restaurants and seven Ed’s Easy Diners are set to close, while the rent of a further thirteen outlets is expected to be cut. The leasehold sites affected have become loss-making or marginal.
The insolvency procedure, which is being handled by KPMG, requires 75% creditor approval to proceed and would precipitate a funding injection into the business from Boparan Restaurant Group, part of the business empire of Ranjit Boparan, 52, the so-called “chicken king”.
