Bollinger buys US vineyard

Bollinger is heading to the US to buy its first ever vineyard outside France.

The Bollinger family, which produces one of the world’s most famous brands of champagne, has agreed a deal to buy the renowned Ponzi Vineyards in Oregon.

The acquisition includes the winery and hospitality facilities near Portland and 35 acres of vineyards in the Willamette Valley. The Ponzi family, a producer of pinot noir for half a century, will retain 100 acres to grow and sell grapes to Ponzi Vineyards under a long-term contract.

Bollinger follows in the footsteps of Mumm, which makes Cuvée Napa sparkling wine in the Napa Valley, Moët & Chandon, which established Domaine Chandon in Argentina, and Taittinger, which has planted vines in Kent under the Domaine Evremond marque.
