Blackpool tackles issue of substandard rentals

Blackpool is looking to improve the quality of housing offered to renters, buying up private, substandard properties and bulldozing them, building new homes in their place.

So far 59 such properties have been bought up, some using compulsory purchase orders.

The council also has its own agency to deal with rentals, and has introduced a licensing scheme for private landlords. It is also looking to put together a comprehensive register of rental properties
