Birmingham City Council has decided to postpone making a decision on plans for a 317-bed purpose-built student accommodation scheme until the Higher Education Statistics Agency releases student demand data for the 2024/25 academic year.
In a planning meeting today, Lavender Property Group’s proposal, which had been recommended for approval, was deferred with 11 votes for and one against.
The development involves building two blocks of five and six storeys on a car park fronting Cecil Street and Cliveland Street.
The accommodation will comprise 192 studios and 125 beds in clusters of five, nine and 12 bedrooms.
Councillor David Barker said at the meeting that the council should wait for demand data as the scheme is not located near the University of Birmingham, however it is close to the Birmingham City University.
HESA data is due to be released on 12 September.
