Barts Health NHS Trust has secured approval to build 1,500 homes at Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone.
Waltham Forest’s planning committee on Wednesday 24 November approved the hybrid application, which includes a new hospital for the trust on the 27-acre site.
Plans include 54,000 sq ft of class-E commercial space proposed as retail, a cafe, restaurants, co-working and a gym. Half of the homes will be provided as affordable tenures, of which 70% will be social-rented and 30% will be shared-ownership.
The application includes detailed plans for a change of use of the Victorian hospital to residential and the hospital chapel to community use.
The outline application is for the development of 21 buildings on 11 plots, with heights of up to 18 storeys.
GL Hearn is advising Barts Health NHS Trust on planning.
